What Are You Trading Your Life Time For?

Just a reminder about what you are trading your life for...

New Shiny Object Syndrome

I was coaching a group of entrepreneurs the other day when someone just starting out asked which niche they should focus on. To be clear they had a business but found they were able to serve several audiences. My advice about this came a little out of left field; they probably expected me to say;

  • The one that will pay you the most or

  • The biggest niche or

  • The one that’s easiest to market to or

  • The one that’s easiest to sell to or

  • The one that’s closest to your location or

  • The one that’s most likely to buy from you or

  • The one that’s growing and not declining in numbers or

All of which are very valid but the thing that often gets over looked is this.If you intend to work in your business and not something you intend to quickly grow and sell, then you need to realise that you are going to be trading a lot of your time (life) to be with these people either in person or psychologically.

Instead of time spent with your partner, your kids, your family, your friends etc you are going to be spending a massive amount of time with strangers who don’t care about “you” but what your business can do for them. Now there’s nothing wrong with being of service to others, in fact, being of service is one of my highest values.

However, of the 24 hours in a day, if you spend 8-9 hours asleep and 8-9 hours working, you only have 6 hours left, of this you will probably be doing all the things we do to make our lives work e.g. house work and/or care giving, making meals, studying and learning, eating and cleaning, shopping, commuting and waiting in queues as well as the ubiquitous use of the internet for doom scrolling and so on. There’s very little left for those we love.

So when you decide to trade your precious time to do your work.Make sure that it’s with people who you want to be with. As entrepreneurs we have a choice, make a wise one. Remember you are literally trading your life time.
