Is the world that you experience 'real' or the result of filters that let through onlyConvex or Concave the details you are willing to experience?
We all experience the world differently. You cannot hear the tinnitus ringing in my ears. I can’t see the scotoma in your eye.
It’s incredibly challenging to put our most cherished prejudices aside in order to listen and look from a different point of view. But if we truly want to understand, someone else’s point of view, that’s what we have to do. Otherwise we are simply collecting more evidence for ‘my way is the right way’.
I recently watched a podcast where an incredibly brilliant inventor was incredibly enthusiastic about changes that Trump was making to red tape holding back research and development in the US. Because of my beliefs about Trump, I would have normally stopped the video and moved on.
My prejudice (pre-justice) would have stopped me hearing anything that would challenge my beliefs.
However because I trust the host of this podcast I hung in there and got to see that this in fact was not only a good thing for the inventor, for the USA but for the world. If his invention works it will dramatically reduce the cost of power, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, reduce our polluting impact on the planet and much more. The inventor said that this technology would be available in a few months not the decades it would have take in the red tape had stayed in place.
This got me wondering if there was more that I wasn’t seeing and hearing in relation to the USA because I was choosing to only see life one way and not the other, convex and not concave or both? Of course this is not just about politics. It’s related to every aspect of my / our understanding of the world and everyone and everything in it.
